Ooops!

In Korean there are a few characters that combine sounds, which are seperated in English. This can make for some funny slip ups when they're speaking English since its REALLY difficult for them to pronunciate each one. For example: B/P, K/G and R/L. The latter is the most common and I always make fun of them when I ask what their favorite food is and they say "lice." I repeat "LICE"!?!?! (and make the motion of picking bugs out of someones hair and eatting it. Then they get it and all freak out.

Yesterday a funny one came up. My H5 class was talking about Sponge Bob Square Pants and describing him to me. They were trying to say that he has "holes' all over him, but instead they kept saying "whores". I kept repeating the two to let them hear the difference, but they just couldn't get it. Finally they looked in their electronic dictionaries to find out what "whore" means. They got it right after that...

I wish I could just go to Korea this summer.... but I have to wait until I graduate. And I think you'll be gone by that time!
The soonest I can go is Aug 2008.

If you wanna get them making fun of each other, challenge them to pronounce (and write, don't say) "Fruit" and "Flute" differently, and watch hilarity ensue. :P My kids can hear the difference when I do it (or not, when other students can't), but can't all quite get their tongues to do it :P

Today one boy was trying DESPERATELY to say a word to answer me...and he couldn't spell what he wanted to say...and so I just gave up after like 5 minutes of him repeating it over and over and OVER. I still have NO idea what he wanted to say, and I felt SO bad that I couldn't understand. All I know is that there were too many "S" (non-shi) and l/r sounds in the word for him to make it work hahahaha
