Used and abused.
Ok not really, but I feel like it could head in that direction.
You see at my school there are 18 foreign teachers. There used to be 3 "senior" teachers. They basically were the go betweens for the teachers and korean staff. They are usually a little older and more mature than the others. One of them was my great friend Jenn who left a month ago and Ryan who left 2 weeks ago. A new teacher has been promoted to take over for Ryan, but I don't really think he has started doing anything. Among other duties, they are responsible for training the new teachers. One teacher is in charge of the Seniors, another for the Juniors and then there is the basics.
Jenn was the basics queen. Now it appears I've become the new person that people come to when they have questions. Its kind of funny actually. I've even been helping out the new senior teacher as he really doesn't have experience with the young ones. I seriously love them and I enjoy those classes more than any others.
So, yesterday I was informed that I'm to do the basics training for the new teacher. I wasn't asked if it would be alright, but more told that I had to do it. She handed me the schedule for the new teacher with 3 different days of training stuff that I have to do with him. I'm just a little surprised that they just go ahead and make plans assuming that I'm going to be ok with it.
The thing is, I don't like the idea that I'm going to have to train all the new teachers and any time they need a 3rd person to do something they come to me without being paid for it. The other 2 teachers that have to do the same stuff get paid for it. (and they get the title and more respect) I feel like I'm just being taken advantage a bit. I don't know, maybe I'm overreacting. I don't know if I should say something about it or just let it be. I really don't want to stir the pot, especially when things are going so well at work right now.
Overall I am really happy here. I just thought I should throw that in there in case there are doubts after all this.

hmm... I don't know what to say to that... My co-teachers always want me to do extra things too. At first they would just tell me "Maybe you will do some extra classes for some students?" ("maybe" not actually an applicable word, of course). So rather, just return conversation the same way. "So what will I be paid for them?" (If she didn't specifically say you wouldn't be, then this is a completely normal question, no?)
Chances are, they'll get the point. Just go to them and ask.
My unsolicited opinion is this:
If you don't want to stir the pot, tuck this away in a little file somewhere (a real file, not a metaphorical one) for that day when you are ready to say something. Should they stick you with something again, you may want to mention that it's extra to your job description and that you deserve adequate compensation for the extra work.
It's a job and you have every right to receive a fair wage for fair work.
And now, I am going to go eat a pile of scrambled eggs that I am going to cook for myself.
Hey Girl! They should give you overtime pay for every hour that you're training. They may not have told you and just expect you to know that. I used to train during prep time and still get overtime pay. Just politely say to Emma " Oh Emma will the overtime pay for training be on this pay or next pay" then they'll know that you know the score. Hang in there!
