Seodaemun Prison

A bunch of us went to the Seodaemun Prison in Seoul this weekend. It was where Korean independence fighters were held during the Japanese colonial rule from 1910-1945. Most stuff was in Korean so it was difficult to get the full story. Korea has such an interesting (and sad) history which I know very little about. I'm slowly learning bits and pieces. There were some life sized models of tortures complete with moving parts (mainly knives etc being stabbed) and audio of screams and stuff that we couldn't understand. It was creepy. I felt as if they're more concerned with letting know people know just how badly they were tortured and everything they had to go through than honouring their memories. Granted, there wasn't a lot I could understand, so I could have missed that part...

Unfortunately I've been watching Prison Break, so I kept thinking about being a prisoner and then breaking out with Wentworth Miller. Sorry, I probably had too much fun for where we were. Of course we had to line up to get a picture in front of the flag. (So at least I knew that even the Koreans weren't too worked up about what they were seeing.)

You're doing that "peace/victory" thing in this photo. Can you explain what that is all about?
