Korean Taxis
Taxi cabs are a treat in Korea. There are a few things that you might want to know about them:
1) The black ones are "luxury cabs". They cost a lot more money than the white ones.
2) The back door on the driver's side doesn't open from inside. Ever.
3) They're much cheaper than back home.
4) At night they will go as fast as they please, whether there are passengers or not.
5) It is normal to run red lights. They usually slow down a bit and honk their horn, but not always.
6) It is rare to get a driver who isn't either super mean/angry or way too friendly (they love to practice their English)
7) No one puts on seat belts in the back seat. Most of the time they're pushed into the seat so you can't get them anyways. One time I was actually pointed and laughed at for trying to put mine on. (what's really scary is that I've stopped feeling weird without one on.)
8) There is no tipping. If you tip, they will be insulted.
9) Negotiating a price is acceptable. You can pretty much fight them on anything.
10) Most of them have little TVs on the dashboard that they watch Korean dramas or game shows on. (yes, when they're driving)
11) It's normal for them to pick up different passengers going to different places. It's a double fare, we just have to go with it.
12) U-turns and completely cutting other people off are ok. So is driving on the wrong side of the road.
13) It never ceases to amaze me that I'm able to direct a taxi without being able to speak Korean.
14) and finally, once in a while you'll get the best guy ever who will take you to the MacDonald's drive thru and wait for you while you bother the employees for a million different things. He loved us.
